Day in the Life – UK Head of Sales

A typical day for me, that’s Al (short for Alastair) and not Artificial Intelligence, isn’t actually that typical. My role is UK Head of Sales and it is, in my opinion, the best role in the company. Let me explain why.

My role is very varied. We are a scale-up, disruptive business and we are rapidly growing. That means getting involved in many facets of the business – especially those that directly involve our clients and partners. I am lucky that I get to cover sales and marketing, but also am involved with client implementations, client reviews, product road-map planning and, as we are expanding, lots of recruitment. That is when I’m in the office, which isn’t all that often as I spend a lot of my time out and about seeing clients, attending conferences and giving talks about the future of psychometric assessment.

But, if I did have a typical day it might be something like this…

I have a young family, so after the chaos of early mornings before the nursery and school run, I commute into London and head of the office. Some days I need to be slightly late in due to childcare needs and Arctic Shores are great at supporting this (and early finishes, if needed too). We have the flexibility to adjust our working day around personal commitments – and it really does help those of us with little ones.

The start of the day is spent catching up on emails and messages from clients and making sure that any actions for clients are in progress and/or complete. The sales and marketing teams work really closely, so I’ll catch up with some of the team and make sure they have everything they need from me. The market is really interested in our offering – so it is a busy time for the team. It is our job to promote the benefits of using our neuroscience and app-based assessments – and it is something the team thrive in doing.

I’ll then be off to see a client (or two or three!). I love to be out-and-about seeing our clients, prospective clients and partners. It is always fascinating to hear the challenges that they have – regardless of industry, size of company or area of recruitment. We work with well over 100 clients in some really diverse market sectors. It is a privilege to be invited in by some of the worlds biggest companies to help them with their recruitment challenge. We are at an intriguing time in the assessment space and HR Tech market; the future is unknown, volatile and tremendously exciting – and consulting with the Talent Acquisition professionals shaping it is the best part of my job at Arctic Shores.

The downside of being out of the office so much is that I do have to try and stay on top of everything on the move – but nowadays technology helps with that. I’ll usually be joining a call or two from somewhere remote (I have a growing list of odd places I’ve attempted to do a webex call) on my travels.

On the days I get back to the office I try to make the most of being around the team and in our amazing workspace. Arctic Shores is a very collaborative place and the team are always happy to share information and knowledge share with colleagues – which is great! We have a young, dynamic team and there always seems to be something going on after work as well – whether that is doing some sport, yoga or off to an activity as a group – I try to get involved when I can.

That would be about it – but as I say there is no such thing as a typical day. And that’s more than fine by me!
